What is MOQ in cosmetics?

MOQ stands for minimum order quantity — the smallest amount a supplier will produce in one run. It is the number that makes or breaks an indie launch budget.

Typical MOQ ranges in beauty

Stock/white-label products can start at no minimum or 10–50 units. Custom formulas often start at 500–1,000 units per SKU. Packaging and ingredients have their own separate minimums, which catch many first-time founders off guard.

How to lower or negotiate an MOQ

Start with a supplier's stock formulas, combine SKUs to hit a minimum, ask about sample or trial runs, and be upfront that you are a launching brand — many labs have a low-minimum tier they do not advertise loudly.

Why are MOQs so high?

Setup, cleaning and filling a production line has fixed costs the supplier spreads across the run. Bigger runs are cheaper per unit.

Do packaging MOQs differ from formula MOQs?

Yes — bottles, jars and tubes are ordered separately and often have their own minimums and lead times. Plan both at once.
